OPB: Oregon Field Guide

Coming to Oregon Field Guide
Model rockets soar thousands of feet in Oregon’s high desert
In the high desert of Brothers, Oregon, a passionate community gathers to launch homemade rockets high into the sky.
Our upcoming episode of Oregon Field Guide—produced by director Michelle Alvarado and producer Henry Kim together with OPB’s talented team Ed, Stephani, and Brooke—follows the Leibowitz family: father Ike and daughter Margalit, whose shared love of rocketry anchors a vibrant group of enthusiasts.
From a scratch-built Cheetos can rocket to a glowing night launch nicknamed Glow Stick, their story shows how science, creativity, and perseverance can ignite connection and community.
Michelle was inspired by her husband’s passion for rockets and pitched the idea to OPB. Being in the right place at the right time, the story is now available online and will broadcast this spring on OPB/PBS.
